Every time I start a new workout program or try to get focused on getting back into shape, I end up bored with it after a few days. P90X has been a lot of start and stop for me and I suck at staying motivated. There are so many distractions, things that seem like more fun, etc. that I have a hard time sticking with it. I have tried convincing myself of the usual “do it for your kids,” “do it so you live longer,” and probably every other mind trick but then I convince myself that even by getting back into shape there is no guarantee that the effort is really going to accomplish any of those reasons to do it. Maybe I just need to stop thinking about it and push through with the thought that nothing is guaranteed and doing something is better than nothing at all.

I know it’s just an excuse and exercise isn’t necessarily supposed to be fun, but there has to be something that keeps people motivated beyond the typical reasons people use as “feel good” type answers…

Well, that’s not the only reason, but I see it as an opportunity to own my time and my life more than in the past. I get tired of the start/stop process that has been my attempts at losing weight in the past. Many times it was caused by work related distractions, traveling for work, or just being burnt out as a result of work. I’ve worked from home for most of the past 10 years, so it’s easy to burn out.

I’m starting this program AGAIN today. I’m going to plan it into my schedule and keep work from interfering with it.

Also, to those people who have commented over the past couple month, I apologize for not approving them. For some reason I never got an alert that they were submitted.

I’ve never done Yoga before. This was probably the most difficult workout so far. It’s not that it was painful or anything (at least not yet). The stretching felt pretty good. I’m just not coordinated enough yet to do some of this stuff and not feel like I’m going to fall over or pull a muscle. I enjoyed this workout, but as someone who has never done Yoga before, it was a major pain in the butt trying to watch what they were doing in the video and follow along at the same time. Maybe I need a TV on the floor and it would be ok :) I guess that as time goes on, I’ll pick everything up and it’ll be fine, but for now I suck at it. If I had thought ahead, I would have watched the dvd ahead of time and got a feel for things.

The ab exercises at the end were pretty good and a nice change of pace from normal ab exercise that I’ve done in the past.

Today’s workout was very painful. I’ve never had much upper body strength and especially not very balanced strength. My shoulders are weak points and I hope that doing this workout as part of P90X will help change that. Right now, they are numb. It feels really good, but I know they’re going to be sore tomorrow.

My eating has been a bit sketchy…more forgetting to eat than normal with as busy as I am. I know that’s not a good excuse and I do need to do something about it.

Back tomorrow for more pain

I’m a little slow writing this post, but holy crap am I sore. I think plyometrics is probably one of the most difficult workouts I’ve ever done. It reminded me of doing conditioning during football in high school, minus the sprints. By the end, I was dragging quite a bit and not able to keep up very well, but eventually I’ll get there.

I definitely need to get my eating and drinking straightened out, but at least I’m heading the right direction.

I’ve been going to a trainer for the past 2 months just to get in shape enough that I felt comfortable starting P90X. The chest and back workout is pretty hard and even after some training, it kicked my butt. I’m a bit overweight right now - 6′2″ 265 pounds. A couple of the pushup exercises took more strength than I have right now. I’m hoping to finally stick with the program and keep this going. More than anything, just doing it is the biggest hurdle.

The goal of this blog is to give me a place to document my progress and help out other people in similar situations as me. I have several acquaintences who are either doing or have completed their first 90 days and none of them have anything bad to say about the program. As with any exercise though, you have to do it
